The novels Hatchet and Forbidden City can be compared easily because they describe stories of teenagers facing conflict and struggle. The similarities and differences between both books are the shown in the conflicts between the main characters and themselves, their familes, nature and society. By examining these problems in ecah novel one can see that they both deal with the overall topic of teenagers coming of age and creating their own identity through challenges and difficulties.
In the novels Hatchet and Forbidden City , the similarities and are within the conflicts of families Alex and Brian are in divorced families. Another similarity is that they are both angry and upset about it. Brian is upset when he sees his mom cheating on his dad,"........ his mother sitting with the man, ......... the white blond man ..... "(Hatchet, Pg.30) Because alex was a little older so it was easy for him to handle the situation. "he would never feel the same about food" (Pg.34 Hatchet)
Secondly, the diiferences between the novels is the conflict between Alex is in a new country and he doesn't know the lanuguage and also doesn't know where to go and hes all allone now. Brian was in a different place also and didn't know where to find food and to stay in. Alex is having problems with what to do because he alone and in danger. Brian is having a hard time finding something eat and making a home.
Finally, the similarities and differences between the two main character's struggle for identity are the challenges they face. First of all, Alex got shot and he lost his dad, but he escapes the city with disguised and by his friends help. Brian almost blinded, crashed with the plane and got attacked by a moose and got in a fight with a bear, sick and mosquitoes were bugging him but he still survived frow the wildness.
